Alcoholic whipped cream

So there’s whipped cream…and then there’s bourbon whipped cream. Or insert your favorite booze in the blank: rum, kahlua, Irish cream: you get the idea! Yes, alcoholic whipped cream is a thing, and it’s just what you need to take your desserts to the next level. Infusing alcohol in whipped cream brings a nuance and warmth. Just think: a chocolate chip skillet cookie with bourbon whipped cream. Yes, it’s as good as it sounds! Alex and I were happy to have a new variation to add to all our favorite desserts (below is our very long list). Ready to get cooking?

How to make infused alcoholic whipped cream

Making alcoholic whipped cream is just like making the standard variety, but you’ll add 1 shot of booze to the cream and sugar before whipping it. If you’ve never made homemade whipped cream, you are in for a treat! When Alex and I first started cooking together, this homemade whipped cream recipe is one of the first things we made together. It tasted so REAL, so unlike the spray can version, that we vowed never to go back. (And we haven’t.)

It only takes a few minutes to whip up alcoholic whipped cream, and once you’ve made it you’ll never go back to store-bought stuff. Here are the basic steps for how to make it at home (scroll down for the full recipe):

  • Combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, and 1 shot of alcohol of your choice in a bowl.
  • Whip vigorously until the cream thickens OR use a KitchenAid stand mixer with the whisk attachment on medium speed. You can make a loose cream or whip until stiff peaks form for a fluffier consistency.

How to store it!

This alcoholic whipped cream recipe is best made the day of serving: and we assume you’ll want to eat it then, too! But if you must, it can be made up to 1 day in advance. Simply store it in an airtight container and refrigerate until you’re ready to enjoy. If the liquid separates out, whip it again to incorporate the liquid (this will only take a minute or two).

Alex and I recommend serving it immediately though. It’s just too good!

How to make vegan whipped cream?

You can make a vegan whipped cream by whipping the solidified cream from a can of coconut milk. Here’s our Coconut Whipped Cream recipe. Though we haven’t tried it, we assume that the method of adding booze similar to the recipe below will work (use the same quantity). Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Infused Alcoholic Whipped Cream

  • Author: Sonja Overhiser
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 0 minutes
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 2 cups 1x

Description

This infused alcoholic whipped cream has a hint of bourbon that adds nuance and warmth as a dessert topping. Other booze can stand in (rum, kahlua, etc)!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons alcohol, such as bourbon, rum, kahlua or Irish cream

Instructions

  1. Place a bowl in the freezer to chill for a few minutes (if using a stand mixer, skip to the next step).
  2. Combine the cream, powdered sugar and alcohol in the chilled bowl.
  3. With a large whisk, whip the cream by moving the whisk back and forth quickly (try to whisk in a line instead of a circular motion)  and whip to your desired thickness is reached. OR place the ingredients in the bowl of a KitchenAid stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, and mix on medium speed until the desired consistency is reached.  You can use a looser cream for more of a “drizzle”, or a stiffer whipped cream for the traditional Cool Whip style texture. Tip: If you’re whipping by hand, try placing the bowl in the sink to whip the cream so that it is a bit lower than a table, which helps to make the whisking motion easier.
