Got blackberries? This blackberry margarita is quick and easy to make, and turns out sweet tart and vivid purple.

Blackberry margarita

Sure, you can drink a classic margarita. But what about a blackberry margarita? This variation is easy to make and looks simply stunning with its vivid purple color. And the flavor? It’s tangy, it’s sweet, and it’s perfectly balanced. With fresh blackberries in season, we whipped up this berry take on my favorite drink: and now I think I prefer this one to the classic! We served it with shrimp tacos as a signature cocktail and it made for the perfect dinner party menu.

How to make a blackberry margarita

This blackberry margarita recipe came from a challenge from a friend of ours, Sierra, who went to the farmers market and came back with a beautiful basket of blackberries. What should I make with them?, she asked. We happened to have blackberries too, and we whipped up this sweet tart drink in honor of her question.

The ingredients you’ll need for this blackberry margarita are:

  • Ripe blackberries
  • Tequila reposado
  • Lime juice
  • Maple syrup
  • A pinch of salt

You’ll just blend together these ingredients in a blender, then strain it to remove the seeds. Quick and simple! We’ve been making a lot of frozen drinks lately for entertaining: which require a little forethought because you have to freeze things overnight. This one doesn’t require any thinking ahead at all: just blend and go!

Keeping it naturally sweet

In many of our drink recipes, you’ll find we use maple syrup as a sweetener. We love using maple syrup because it’s a natural sweetener, and you can even find it locally. It also tends to sweeten drinks more gently than sugar. A nice thing about using maple syrup for drinks is also that you don’t have to make a simple syrup – so it saves a step! This blackberry margarita has no refined sugar but is naturally sweetened to perfection.

A note on tequila

If you’re making this blackberry margarita recipe, a quick note on the rum you use! We recommend using best quality tequila. The flavor of a drink is all about the quality of the rum. The better the quality of tequila, the tastier the margarita! So if you’re on the fence about whether you should spring for a few extra dollars on the alcohol, we’d say you won’t regret it.

Another tequila drink? The Paloma Cocktail is a cousin of the classic margarita, featuring tequila with grapefruit instead of lime!
