The margarita is one of the most popular classic cocktails: it was invented in Mexico in the 1930’s and is just as popular today! The standard recipe is just 3 ingredients: tequila, Triple Sec or Cointreau, and lime juice. To make the frozen version of it, you’ll just add ice! To counteract the tartness when it’s icy, you’ll need just a hint of simple syrup. That’s right: no need for a store-bought mix! Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

How to make frozen margaritas

How to make frozen margaritas

A good frozen margarita recipe is all about getting that perfect pureed frozen texture. Will it stay frozen or melt within 2 seconds of pouring it into the glass? We tested a variety of methods for making a frozen margarita here. What came out as the best frozen margarita recipe? Here’s the method that resulted in the best flavor and frozen texture. Here’s how to make frozen margaritas (the basic steps):

  1. Rim the glasses: Dip the glass rim into kosher salt or sea salt. (Here we used chunky pink sea salt.)
  2. Blend: Add the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, simple syrup, and ice to a blender and blend until smooth. Go to the recipe below for quantities!

Use great tequila

One tip: buy a great tequila for this recipe! Since tequila is the main flavor in this frozen margarita, spending a few extra dollars on an at least medium quality tequila is recommended! It will highly affect the final flavor of this recipe.

We recommend using tequila reposado for this recipe. This type of tequila is aged and has a more nuanced, interesting flavor than a tequila blanco. Tequila blanco is not aged and has a straightforward flavor. You can use either, but reposado will add the most flavor. Read more at Types of Tequila: Blanco vs Reposado vs Añejo.

Margarita salt

Step it up with margarita salt!

Want to make this frozen margarita recipe look even more festive? Add margarita salt! It’s simply salt, lime, and orange zest mixed together for rimming the glass. The best part: you’ll already have the limes on hand when making this frozen margarita (just zest it first!). Head to our Best Margarita Salt for instructions.

If you don’t want to use fancy margarita salt, you can simply use salt for rimming the glasses. We’ve found that kosher salt is a good size for rimming: or use chunky sea salt like this pink sea salt! Of course, you can use any salt or purchased margarita salt to your liking.
