There’s nothing more refreshing than a rose spritzer! Add bubbles to your favorite rosé wine to make the perfect summer drink.

Rose spritzer

Here’s a drink that you 100% must try ASAP. A rose spritzer! This is the perfect way to make a no-fuss summer drink that’s full of refreshing bubbles. Alex and I discovered spritzers when we took a trip to visit friends in Austria, and they are one of the most refreshing drinks on the planet. Bonus: they’re very low calorie, too! Enjoy this rose spritzer over happy hour, next to the pool, or while smelling the charcoal at a grilled dinner party.

What is a spritzer?

A spritzer is a refreshing drink made with wine and soda water that originated in Austria. It’s thought to have started in the 19th century as a way to make bubbly wine. The name comes from the German word “spritzen” which means to spray: referring to diluting wine with water. A spritzer typically dilutes the wine by 25% or 50%, and is a popular summertime drink in Europe. You can make a spritzer with white wine, red wine or rosé wine.

A wine spritzer is similar to a spritz: they both come from the same German word! A spritz is a drink made with sparkling wine (champagne or Prosecco), bitters, and soda water: like an Aperol spritz. Add the “er” and it becomes this refreshing bubbly wine concoction.

How to make a rose spritzer (basic steps)

A rose spritzer is one of summer’s best drinks because it’s so quick and simple to make. Alex and I have been making them on repeat. One nice thing about a spritzer is you don’t have to commit to a bottle of Champagne like a spritz. A bit of soda water is all you need. Here are the basic steps for how to make a rose spritzer (or jump to the recipe below):

  • Grab a bottle of chilled rosé wine.
  • Pour a serving of wine into a glass.
  • Pour in additional 25% soda water (eyeball it).
  • Stir gently and enjoy!

The spritzer ratio

You’ll notice that the spritzer ratio is 3 parts wine to 1 part soda water. You can also use this same ratio to make a white wine spritzer! For red wine, we’ve found that you’ll need to up the amount of soda water to get it to taste bubbly. Use the ratio of equal parts red wine and soda water.

Increase the bubbles if you like!

You can increase the soda water in this rose spritzer to taste. Go up to 50% dilution with soda water if you like. Or you can go even further! A “Summer Spritzer” or Sommer Spritzer is a spritzer that’s diluted by 75% with soda water, which makes for a nice brunch drink or low-alcohol cocktail.
